30 October 2008: Give generously to Poppy Appeal 2008

As part of the national commemorative events on Remembrance Sunday 9th November, Chair of Lewes District Council, Councillor Carla Butler will lay wreaths in Newhaven and Lewes. The Newhaven ceremonies begin with a service at St Michael's Church at 9.45am followed by the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial and the Lewes ceremonies will take place at 2.30pm with the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial followed by a service at St John sub Castro.
 
Chair of Lewes District Council, Councillor Carla Butler said ‘As Chair of Lewes District Council, I should like to add my public support to the British Legion Poppy Appeal.  I know there are many appeals for financial assistance particularly during this difficult time but may I ask your readers and their families to give as generously as they are able to the Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion are also undertaking a Poppy People campaign to attract new Poppy Appeal volunteers. If you are over 16 years of age and would like to volunteers you only need ring 0800 085 5924.

The calls on the British Legion funds increase year by year as they endeavour to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of the ever increasing number of those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces. It is through the Poppy Appeal that they provide the practical help for those in need during times of hardship and distress. Your help in meeting these needs will be greatly appreciated.’

Lewes District Council is supporting the call from the Royal British Legion for a National Two Minute Silence on Tuesday 11 November at 11am.
At the same time as people remember those who lost their lives serving their country maroon rockets will be fired to mark the start and finish of the silence at various locations around the district including Barcombe, Chailey, Newhaven, Newick, Lewes and Peacehaven.
