The gates open at 10:30 am with a programme of special events featuring throughout the day. A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be just one of many highlights, as a World War II Dakota performs a spectacular flypast over Newhaven Fort *. The view from the ramparts is always breathtaking and as the hum of the approach can be heard, visitors can almost reach out and touch the plane as it flies overhead. The entertainment will begin at 11am with a concert by the Seaford Silver Band playing wartime favourites. In the afternoon the Brighton Jive Dancers with the Swing-time Sweethearts will be performing a lively and nostalgic dance display in 1940’s costume, creating the perfect atmosphere. Audience participation encouraged! A living history society will be situated in the Grand Magazine displaying a WW11 first aid post, troop shelter and command post throughout the day. Actors will be dressed in period uniform and will be present to answer any questions about their display. A stunning photographic exhibition by 131 Design is also set to be launched in the Fort’s Romney Hut on the 14th. The exhibition will run for two weeks and features dramatic images of war time past. In addition the Fort will be hosting the annual Women’s Land Army reunion where guests will be travelling from all over the south to reunite and meet with old friends and colleagues. Notes to Editor: * Subject to operational conditions Newhaven Fort is an award-winning visitor attraction, open to the public from March to October. The Fort is owned and operated by Lewes District Council and offers visitors the opportunity to experience a day out with a difference, as they step into wartime Britain and follow in the footsteps of people who lived through the first and second World Wars. The massive walls, ramparts, tunnels and gun emplacements all fire the imagination, and the clifftop location offers stunning, far-reaching views across Seaford Bay, Newhaven Port and the English Channel. Newhaven Fort is open daily from 10.30am until 6.00pm (or dusk, if earlier). http://www.newhavenfort.org.uk/ For further information, please contact Danielle Crane on 01273 484403.
