Community Safety

Lewes District Council’s Community Safety Team works in partnership with Sussex Police, East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police Authority, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the Fire Authority and the Primary Care Trusts, as well as a variety of other statutory, voluntary and community organisations to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour within the Lewes District. 

This partnership is called the Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership.

Within the Partnership there are five Local Action Teams (LATS) to look at issues affecting their local areas and bring together the agencies needed to resolve them. These LATS encompass the following areas:

- Seaford and Bishopstone
- Newhaven, Denton, South Heighton and Piddinghoe
- Peacehaven, Telscombe and East Saltdean
- Lewes Town
- Lewes Rural including all of the villages

The Lewes District Crime Reduction Partnership (CRP)

In 1998, the government passed the Crime and Disorder Act. This act recognised that improving Community Safety and reducing and preventing crime could not be dealt with by the Police alone and led to the formation of Crime Reduction Partnership all over England and Wales.

The work of the CRP is funded by government grant and supported by Lewes District, and our progress is closely monitored by the Government Office of the South East.

Achievements

During the period between September 2007 to August 2008 the Partnership has achieved a reduction in overall crime of 6.54% compared to the period September 2006 to August 2007. That means 411 fewer victims of crime. Over the same period criminal damage fell by 4.5% resulting in 85 fewer victims.

Development of the Community Safety Plan 2008-11

The CRP produces a 3 yearly strategy for reducing crime and disorder in the District, which is reviewed annually to ensure we are still focussing on the issues which most matter.  The strategy is based on a Strategic Intelligence Assessment, which reviews all available data on crime trends and incorporates what local people have told us about their concerns.  Information used in the Assessment includes data on crime and antisocial behaviour, drug and alcohol data, results from surveys of local opinion and Fire and Rescue Service data. 

Through this work, the CRP has identified 3 priorities for action for period 2008-11.  These are:

• Alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour – enforcement of licensing powers, reducing crime antisocial behaviour linked to alcohol, tackling underage drinking and reducing domestic violence.
• Vehicle crime and safety – reducing theft of and from vehicles and combating dangerous or antisocial driving.
• Information management – ensuring we use and share timely data on crime trends and that we consult with and engage our communities in our work.

Action groups have been set up to address each of the 3 priority areas and to allocate funding to help achieve the aims of the Community Safety Plan.
